GOOD NEWS AGREEMENT REACHED FOR WESTFAIR MEMBERS

September 27, 2008
RATIFICATION DATE MOVED TO SUNDAY, OCTOBER 5. A province wide strike was averted at 4:00a.m. this morning after the UFCW Local 832 negotiating committee reached a tentative agreement with Westfair Foods.

Negotiations continue, both sides still far apart.

Both sides kept bargaining today, As of 9:25 p.m. the union is preparing a counter offer for the company's latest proposal. President Ziegler stated that negotiations are getting strained as tomorrow nights’ deadline is quickly approaching. Both sides are still very far apart on wages, scheduling and premiums. The first of many UFCW Local 832 Strike Headquarter trailers was delivered today by the St. Anne’s store, four more are being delivered tomorrow. The union negotiating committee is expecting an intense day of bargaining.

President Robert Ziegler and the negotiating committee met with store contacts  to update them on the status of their negotiations. To hear update #4  click here. The company's latest offer was for five years that equated to 50 cents over the life of the agreement with a few lump sum payments to some of the most senior members.

NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE #2 September 20, 2008 Negotiation Committee Disappointed with Company. It seems to be a common practice for the company, after a few good days of productive bargaining, to revert back to their old ways and their favourite saying, “we respectfully decline the union’s proposal.” Your union negotiating committee was prepared to bargain all weekend, which the company had previously agreed to, but now they are unavailable until Sunday afternoon.

Update on Westfair Negotiations

After the second day of this round of bargaining the union negotiating committee is pleased with how negotiations have progressed but we are “cautiously optimistic”. Progress has been made on some of the major issues, local union president Robert Ziegler is hoping that the company is now realizing the urgency of finding a deal after it seemed like they were dragging their feet in previous sessions. UFCW Saskatchewan President Paul Meinema along with UFCW Alberta Local Secretary-Treasurer, Theresa Maclaren and lead-negotiator Tom Hesse have also been here to observe the negotiations.

Intense negotiations will start today as the unions’ negotiating committee has prepared itself for round the clock bargaining. Paul Meinema, President of UFCW Local 1400 and Theresa McLaren, Secretary-Treasurer of UFCW Local 401 joined the bargaining table today. Both locals are also negotiating with Westfair. Prior to the company arriving, President Ziegler discussed that the bargaining will start to become more interesting as the monetary issues will start to be addressed in the coming days.

After the last round of bargaining both sides seem far apart on a new collective agreement with the company dragging its heels on the major issues.

August 24, 2008
Extra Foods and Superstore members give negotiation committee strike mandate. After a province wide strike vote, UFCW Local 832 members working for Westfair foods voted 99% to reject the company's offer and 98% in favour of strike action. Negotiations are set to resume on Tuesday, August 26.

A province wide strike vote date has been set for August 24 for Westfair workers. Over 3000 UFCW Local 832 members are being asked to support the negotiating committee and vote in favour of a strike.

Westfair negotiations start strong but stall on third day

The first round of bargaining ended on Friday, July 18. It started off well with the company agreeing to eight issues over the first two days, unfortunately the negotiations went downhill after that and the company declined to agree on anything the union proposed.
