Negotiations Cultivating at Sun Gro Horticulture

Negotiations for a new collective agreement for the union members at Sun Gro Horticulture are underway. The bargaining committee for the union, led by negotiator Sonia Taylor and assisted by members Tom Biebrich and Brad Keller, met with the Company and exchanged a significant amount of proposals.

The parties had good discussions and agreed to minor non-monetary items. All major proposals remain outstanding. Additional bargaining dates have been scheduled for November 12 and 13 and December 10 and 11, 2019. 

Sun Gro Negotiations Set to Start

The union and the company bargaining committees will meet on August 20 to begin negotiations towards a new collective agreement for the members working at Sun Gro Horticulture Ltd. Talks will continue on August 21, September 23 and 24. 
Union negotiator Sonia Taylor will provide an update as to the status of these negotiations after the September 24 meeting. Assisting negotiator Taylor on the union bargaining committee is Tom Biebrich and Brad Keller.

Conciliation date set for Sun Gro negotiations

November 26, 2014

After meeting with members on November 23,  the provincial government has provided union with our next conciliation date which is scheduled for January 27, 2015.

The union is very close to having a potential agreement, the union negotiating committee still has to finalize a couple of extremely important items before we are in a position to present you a proposed contract that you will support.

Sun Gro Negotiations Update

September 29, 2014

UFCW Local 832 applied to the provincial government to appoint a conciliator to assist with the negotiations at Sun Gro Horticulture. Negotiations had come to an impasse and the union was not willing to agree to the company’s concessions.

The union bargaining committee had previously stated to the members at Sun Gro, “These are extremely important issues that your we need to take a strong stance on in order to protect our rights and our future.”

Sungro Negotiations Underway

The union negotiating committee comprised of Raymond Popiel, Jim Sitar and UFCW Local 832 negotiator Martin Trudel exchanged a significant number of proposals with the employer on June 19 & 20, 2014. 

Both parties had proposals regarding issues that needed to be looked at in terms of changes to the existing contract language, benefits and wages. Although some agreements were reached on certain proposals, there are a number of outstanding ones that are still on the table and will need to be addressed at the next bargaining sessions.

Negotiating committee elected. On Sunday, February 28, 2010 we held a very successful proposal meeting to collect member feedback prior to collective bargaining.  Your union negotiating committee was elected and will consist of Donald Knopf, Thomas Biebrich and myself. Wages for the 81 UFCW Local 832 members employed at SunGro Horticulture will rise by eight per cent over the term of their new agreement

On June 9, 81 UFCW Local 832 members employed at Sungro ratified a new four-year agreement. The vote was 78 per cent in favour of acceptance. Members will see an eight per cent wage increase over the four-year deal along with improvements in meal allowances, evening and night shift premiums and footwear allowances. There are also increases in life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, short term disability, pension, vision care, and health care insurance benefits. Many other language changes were made to improve and clarify the new collective agreement.
