Round the clock bargaining nets Safeway members a tentative agreement.

March 13, 2009
At 6:00a.m. Friday morning negotiations between UFCW Local 832 and Canada Safeway concluded after both parties came to an agreement. Details of the agreement will not be released until the members have a chance to hear the details and vote on it this Sunday. President Ziegler is glad to be presenting a “Tentative Agreement” this Sunday instead of a recommendation of rejection to the company’s last offer.

Safeway negotiations grind to a halt.

March 11, 2009
This morning both sides traded proposals and negotiations quickly came to a standstill. When the union reviewed the company’s last proposal it became evident that a strike is a real possibility. “After our discussions with the company today, it’s clear that both sides are very far apart,” stated President Ziegler. While both sides are prepared to negotiate a settlement before the expiry, currently there is no timetable to resume negotiations.


March 10, 2009
On Monday morning talks resumed after a day and a half break. In response to the union’s offer first thing that morning, the company came back with an offer that President Ziegler called, "A vast improvement" but commented that there is still a long way to go.

Safeway shop stewards and store contacts meet for update.

March 8, 2009
On Sunday March 8, the negotiating committee met with Safeway shop stewards and store contacts for an update on the status of negotiations. President Robert Ziegler went through the remaining proposals and had a lengthy discussion with the contacts on what will be taking place over the next few days. “We have a lot of ground to cover before Friday.

Safeway negotiations take a break

On Saturday at 4:30p.m. the union proposed to the company that both sides take a break to consider their positions. While there was considerable discussion on Saturday regarding the major monetary issues, there was no progress being made.  In hopes of salvaging the next week leading up the expiry date, both sides have agreed to meet back on Monday with a fresh perspective after the break.

Robert's Safeway Negotations update #1

We have now completed three days of negotiations since taking the strike vote and I wanted to update you on the status of bargaining.
We’ve made some progress on a few items, but negotiations have started to bog down and in fact on some issues, both sides are deadlocked.

After two full days of bargaining, lead negotiator and UFCW Local 832 President Robert Ziegler was glad to see some movement in the latest round of negotiations. "It's slow going still, but we have made some progress on minor issues. Major items such as wages & pension have yet to be addressed," stated Ziegler. Currently the plan is to keep bargaining through the upcoming weekend in hopes of addressing the major items to avoid a strike. The union is available to bargain around the clock to seek an agreement.
