June 26, 2014

Late today Sobeys announced that they will be closing five of their Manitoba retail stores as well as a warehouse in Thompson whose workers are represented by UFCW Local 832. The closures are part of their Canada wide restructuring following last years’ purchase of Safeway.

The Thompson Cash and Carry warehouse members were notified Monday that the distribution centre would be closing its doors for good on July 18, 2014.

Update on sale of Safeway stores

November 1, 2013

With the Competition Bureau announcing that Sobeys must divest four Safeway stores in Winnipeg and the current collective agreement set to expire in March of 2014 our members have a lot of questions.

UFCW Local 832 President Jeff Traeger met with a Sobeys’ official to get some answers. While there are still many remaining questions, one consistent answer was many things will remain “status quo” for now.

What we know so far:

Safeway gas bar negotiations rescheduled.

June 26, 2013

Unfortunately, the employer was not quite ready to meet with the union  on June 25 to discuss monetary items. On June 24th, they notified the union that  they needed more time to confirm their next steps. While disappointed, the union was able to schedule the next meeting for Friday, July 19.

UFCW Local 832 negotiator, Michelle Masserey anticipates making significant progress on that day, and will send a further update, very likely calling you to a membership meeting, after July 19.
