Local 832 Scholarships
Over 60 scholarships, worth a total of more than $30,000 are awarded each year to members of UFCW Local 832. These scholarships are funded through the UFCW Education and Training Trust Fund which is comprised of employer contributions negotiated in collective bargaining.
In addition to 60 General Scholarships of $500 each there are:
Three $1000 awards for members working at Maple Leaf, Safeway and Westfair.
One $1000 award for members in the Security Sector.
To be eligible for Local 832 scholarships applicants must:
- Be members in good standing for one year
- Work for an employer contributing to the Education and Training Trust Fund (click here for a list of contributing employers)
- Be attending or planning to attend a recognized post-secondary institution on a part-time or full-time basis
- Not have previously won a Local 832 scholarship
Printed applications are available, usually beginning in March of each year, at Local 832 union offices, the Training Centre at 880 Portage at Arlington, or from full-time union representatives. Provision is also made for members to submit their applications directly through this web site, or download and print a copy of the application and submit it by mail or in person.
Scholarships are awarded to eligible applicants on the basis of seniority. All applicants are notified by mail of the results of their application in early July. The scholarship awards ceremonies are held each year in August.
National Council Scholarships
UFCW Canada annually offers five $1000 Beggs-Dowling-Mathieu Scholarships. These scholarships are available to UFCW members and their children in Western Canada. Applicants must be attending school on a full-time basis.
The deadline for receipt of applications and all required material is September 30 of each year. Applications are available from UFCW Local 832 offices in Winnipeg, Brandon and Thompson, and the UFCW Training Centre at 880 Portage Avenue in Winnipeg. UFCW International annually offers one scholarship of up to $8,000 to UFCW Canada members and their unmarried children or dependents. Scholarship winners will receive annual payments of $2,000 for each year they are enrolled in an accredited college or university as a non-probationary student for up to four years.
The scholarships are limited to members who have been active since January 1, 2009 and their unmarried children or dependents under the age of 20. The UFCW Scholarship Application Form must be postmarked no later than April 15, 2010.
