Members at Westburne Cast Light on a New Deal

January 9, 2019

In December 2018, the negotiating committees reached a tentative deal for the renewal of a new collective agreement for the union members working at Westburne Electric Supply. Last week, the UFCW Local 832 union members working at Westburne voted 92 per cent in favour of accepting the new 5-year deal.

Even though the current collective agreement does not expire until April 21, 2019, the company came to the bargaining table eager to get a deal done before the end of 2018 and simply wanted to renew the current agreement.

Westburne is planning on investing millions of dollars into its operations in Winnipeg and sought stability of a new agreement. With this in mind, the union negotiating committee strengthened the language in the agreement regarding bargaining unit work, increased the boot allowance and obtained a wage increase for the members of 13.75 per cent during the life of the contract—3, 2.75, 2.75, 2.75 and 2.5 per cent respectively. The members will also receive a $600 signing bonus in May 2019.

UFCW represents approximately 25 members at the Winnipeg plant.
