FreshCo deal reached, stores converting

July 19, 2018

Today Sobeys announced to our members, it will be converting the two Safeway stores, located at Kildonan Crossing and Jefferson Ave. to the FreschCo banner.

UFCW Local 832 members will remember from bargaining earlier this year that the company would be opening FreshCo stores in Manitoba to compete in the discount grocery market.  Over the past two months, Sobeys and the UFCW Local 832 FreshCo bargaining committee have been working on a FreschCo appendix to the Safeway province-wide agreement for Manitoba and those negotiations have resulted in today’s announcement.

"We have a long history with Safeway, and we know that the new owners, Sobeys, have financial challenges in the West. It is our hope that this new appendix allows Sobeys to be competitive in the Manitoba market, while still protecting the rights of our members, and providing them with many options," stated Jeff Traeger, President of UFCW Local 832.

The members’ options are similar to the No Frills agreement where a percentage of the workers, based on seniority, who decide to stay will keep their current economic package. Bumping rights are available for members who wish to continue to work under the Safeway Banner, and there are rate buy-downs for those who want to stay at the FreshCo locations and buy-outs for those who want to move on.

UFCW Local 832 is proud that much of the mature contract language in the FreshCo appendix was taken from that which was negotiated with Safeway over many decades in our province-wide collective agreement with Sobeys West Inc. for Safeway stores.

UFCW Local 832 represents over 2200 workers at Safeway stores across Manitoba.
