UFCW Local 832 prepares to assist displaced members

June 26, 2014

Late today Sobeys announced that they will be closing five of their Manitoba retail stores as well as a warehouse in Thompson whose workers are represented by UFCW Local 832. The closures are part of their Canada wide restructuring following last years’ purchase of Safeway.

The Thompson Cash and Carry warehouse members were notified Monday that the distribution centre would be closing its doors for good on July 18, 2014.

Members at the IGA store in the Maples, Safeway store 628 in Brandon, 622 in Steinbach, 707 at Sturgeon and Ness and 712 in Garden City have also been notified that their stores will be closing in the near future. In all, more than 300 UFCW 832 members will be affected.

“This is the downside of business mergers and acquisitions. When our members heard of the sale of Safeway to Sobeys last year, many have been wondering when this day would come. While the news is very unfortunate, I would have to say it wasn’t unexpected,” stated UFCW Local 832 President Jeff Traeger. “We will do everything we can to keep our members informed and to ensure their rights under the agreement are honoured through the transition.”

Representatives of the Union are in all the affected stores and will assist the members with any questions that they have. Most of the displaced members have the ability to transfer to other stores and it is our hope that as many of the members affected will be able to stay employed at other Sobeys locations.

Members are encouraged to keep up on developments through the union’s website.
