Visions of Independence employees join UFCW Local 832

April 2, 2009
On April 2, UFCW Local 832 was certified the official bargaining agent for the employees at Visions of Independence. They operate numerous assisted living homes in Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie. The vote took place in December 2008 but the Manitoba Labour Board postponed counting the ballots until it could determine the scope of the bargaining unit. The 100 new UFCW Local 832 members work as front line support staff assisting people with intellectual disabilities. UFCW Local 832 President, Robert Ziegler congratulated the new members for standing up for their rights and joining the UFCW. “In Manitoba we have some of the best labour laws, but it still takes a lot of courage to join a union and stand up for yourself. Unfortunately, fear and intimidation still occurs during organizing drives. These members remained steadfast with their goal of joining our union and on behalf of our local executive I welcome them to a great union,” stated Ziegler. Notices will be going out to the members to inform them of upcoming proposal meetings and dates will be scheduled for negotiations.
