Three days of negotiations concluded

January 13, 2009
After the union and the company met briefly on December 3 to exchange proposals , negotiations resumed on January 7 and 8. The current collective agreement is set to expire on March 14. Negotiations got off to a slow start with a few minor items being agreed to, although the tone at the table has been respectful. UFCW Local 832 President Robert Ziegler is hopeful that the tempo of these negotiations will pick up as there is a lot of ground to cover towards reaching a new agreement. “The issues the members at Safeway want addressed are different than those at Westfair and we have major issues to address,” stated Ziegler. Further negotiations are set for January 21, 22 February 9, 10 and March 2 to 13. There is the possibility of more dates in February if both sides can free up prior commitments.
