Westfair members in Manitoba ratify new five-year collective agreement.

October 5, 2008
On October 5 members working at Superstore and Extra Foods grocery stores in Manitoba ratified a new five-year collective agreement by 76%. After round-the-clock bargaining the agreement was reached early Saturday, September 27. Local 832 was the first of the three western provinces to reach a settlement. UFCW Local 1400 and 401 also averted a strike, as both locals recently reached tentative agreements. On August 24, the members voted 98% in favour of strike action. The other UFCW locals were also ready for strike action as all three provinces were prepared to picket if the company did not remove their concessions. Over 3600 Westfair members will see good improvements over the life of the agreement. The union’s negotiating committee was successful in making sure that all of the company’s concessions were removed from the table.  Members will see improvements to wages, benefits which now include benefits for dependants, an increase in the full-time ratio, which will result in more full-time jobs and money to the stabilization fund to protect the members pension. “This is a good agreement, we were able to get something for everyone,” stated UFCW Local 832 President Robert Ziegler. Voting took place at ten locations across the province to make sure all the members had the opportunity to vote on the new agreement.
