Jeff Traeger began working for Local 832 in the summer of 1998 after serving for six years as the chief steward and on both the health & safety and negotiating committees for the members at Serca Foods (now Sysco). In his years with the Local, Jeff has been an organizer,a servicing representative, a full-time negotiator, and was elected as the secretary-treasurer in June of 2004 where he has been keeping a close eye on the finances ever since. On October 24, 2011 Jeff Traeger became the third full-time president for the Local since 1938.
He currently serves as an executive vice-president of the Manitoba Federation of Labour and is the Manitoba representative on the National Human Rights, Equity and Diversity Committee for UFCW Canada. Jeff also represents the province on the UFCW National Defense Fund where he sits as an administration and audit committee member, and acts as a trustee on eight different health and welfare benefit funds including Safeway, Westfair, Maple Leaf and the dental plan.
Jeff works hard as a member of the Adult Learning Centre board and as a trustee of the local’s training centre to open doors and create educational opportunities for all our members because he believes that’s one of the best ways we can be of service to them. His passion for finding ways to make our union inclusive and relevant has driven many of the local’s diversity and community initiatives to another level and he provides strong leadership for the local’s Community Action Network.
“Being the president for such a progressive organization gives me the opportunity to work with and for many good and talented people. It makes it possible for me to have a positive influence on people’s lives on a daily basis, and that is truly an honour”.
