Michelle first became a member of UFCW Local 832 in June, 1980 when she started working at Safeway. She became a shop steward in 1988, and served on the union negotiating committee in 1989, 1993, and 1995.

Between 1993 and 1995, Michelle served as Local 832′s Education Director. In that capacity, she was responsible for organizing the local’s annual scholarship program, shop steward schools, and various other activities. In 1994, Michelle became a vice-president on Local 832′s executive board.

In the fall of 1993, Michelle was hired by the local for a one-year term to help administer the collective agreement with Safeway. In February, 1995, she began working for the local as a temporary union representative, and became a permanent staff member in November, 1996.

In January 2005, Michelle was promoted to the position of servicing director. In that position, she supervised the activities of Local 832′s union representatives, plus worked as a union rep herself to assist Local 832 members who work in health care and hotels.

In December of 2009 Michelle moved into the negotiations department for the local.
