On Saturday, October 29 UFCW Local 832 President, Jeff Traeger along with City of Brandon Mayor, Shari Decter-Hirst, and MLA for Brandon East, Drew Caldwell officially opened the new UFCW Local 832 Training Centre and Union Office at 530 Richmond Avenue East.
The expansion took 10 months to complete and the former bingo hall has been transformed into a state-of-the-art facility for the UFCW members in Brandon and the Westman area. The new facility will have current computer labs, kitchen facilities, training rooms and a space for our family program. Eventually the training centre will offer space for community groups to rent for special events.
The Local, purchased the building in 2008 after realizing the increased need for its English as an additional language (EAL), grade 12 diploma program along with shop steward and health and safety courses.
“The Westman area continues to grow and its diversity in the community has been evolving over the last number of years. When our new members arrive from other countries and make the Westman area their home, we want to offer them every opportunity to learn our language and learn new skills. Our new training centre will give them that opportunity,” stated President Traeger.
UFCW Local 832 has been the leader in the province for EAL training. The Local now has training facilities in Winnipeg, Neepawa and Brandon.
